Essential Oils - Why Are They Essential?
At CoSkin, essential oils are some of the most powerful ingredients in our range. These oils offer not only soothing aromas but also deliver a wide range of benefits for our skin, muscles, and emotional wellbeing. We use essential oils in our skincare range, and also have two of our own oil blends available online.
Here’s a closer look at the oils we use at CoSkin and why they’re essential in our range.
Carrot Seed Oil
Carrot seed oil is one of the most revitalising essential oils. It helps kill infections while stimulating the growth of new, healthy tissue. With an earthy aroma that soothes stress and anxiety, this oil also acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting the skin from wrinkles and signs of ageing. It’s known to improve circulation and aid muscle recovery.
Cedarwood
Cedarwood has a long history of use as incense and perfume. The Egyptians used Cedarwood for embalming and in cosmetics. Sedative, astringent, and antiseptic, it helps reduce anxiety and nervousness. It also improves concentration and can ease catarrhal conditions, coughs, chronic bronchitis, cystitis, and oily or acne-prone skin. Cedarwood also acts as a natural insect repellent.
Chamomile
Chamomile oil is most well known for its calming nature. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. Rich in azulene, it’s ideal for soothing skin irritations such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Chamomile also has antibacterial qualities, making it useful for treating infections in the mouth, gums, and respiratory tract when inhaled.
Frankincense
Frankincense, extracted from the resin of Boswellia trees, has been valued for centuries in traditional medicine. Known for treating arthritis and aiding wound healing, this oil is excellent for mature skin, helping to reduce wrinkles and scars while promoting healthy blood flow. Frankincense has also shown promising results in treating certain cancers and depression.
Geranium
Geranium oil is known for its ability to support the circulatory and nervous systems, promoting relaxation and skin revitalisation. It is especially beneficial for toning and firming the skin, making it an excellent addition to any skincare routine.
Helichrysum (Immortelle)
Known for its incredible ability to heal deep wounds, bruises, and areas of trauma, helichrysum stimulates cell regeneration. It reduces inflammation and fever, making it a remarkable oil for both skincare and recovery from injury.
Jasmine
Extracted from handpicked flowers, jasmine oil is a potent essential oil. Renowned for its aphrodisiac properties, it is also highly effective for treating nervous anxiety and depression. Jasmine is beneficial for dry and irritated skin, and can provide emotional support, particularly for women during childbirth.
Kanuka
Native to New Zealand, Kanuka is found in abundance in native forests around the country. It has a very similar appearance to the well known Manuka, praised for its medicinal honey. Kanuka essential oil is a powerhouse of anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-ageing properties. Its soothing effects make it useful for treating chronic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, sore muscles, and even burns.
Lavender
Lavender is one of the most versatile essential oils, known for its ability to treat burns, reduce scarring, and calm inflammation. It is excellent for all skin types and also serves as a natural insect repellent. Lavender is effective against certain bacteria involved in acne and fungal infections, making it key for healthy skin.
Myrrh
Myrrh is a gum-resin extracted from a few small, thorny tree species. Myrrh is renowned for its antiseptic and healing qualities. It is highly effective for treating chronic wounds, ulcers, and bruises, and helps tone the skin. Myrrh has astringent properties, making it great for preserving a youthful appearance. Ancient Egyptians used it in preparations to reduce wrinkles and preserve a youthful appearance. The therapeutic qualities are often mentioned in biblical texts as well as those of the Greeks and Romans.
Neroli
Neroli oil, derived from the blossoms of the orange tree, is one of the key oils in perfumery. It acts as an antidepressant, antiseptic, and bactericidal agent. With its rejuvenating effect on dry, sensitive skin, neroli stimulates the growth of new skin cells and helps heal broken capillaries.
Sweet Orange
Sweet orange oil brings a zesty burst of freshness. It is known for its antidepressant, antiseptic, and antispasmodic properties. This oil is also a digestive tonic and lymphatic stimulant, making it a refreshing and relaxing addition to any skincare routine.
Petitgrain
Harvested from the leaves of the bitter orange tree, petitgrain oil helps balance oily skin, reduce blemishes, and control overactive sebaceous glands.
Palmarosa
Palmarosa oil is valued for its hydrating, antiseptic, and cell-regenerating properties. It is ideal for balancing sebum production and treating acne or dermatitis. Its aroma, similar to roses, makes it popular in skincare products.
Patchouli
Patchouli oil is perfect for balancing oily skin and helping with skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. It regenerates skin cells, moisturises, and disinfects, making it an excellent choice for promoting skin health.
Damask Rose
Known as the queen of essential oils, Damask rose is not only a powerful aphrodisiac but also offers antiviral, bactericidal, and anti-inflammatory benefits. It helps heal wounds, reduce wrinkles, and even repel mosquitoes. It's hard to believe but it takes 10,000 roses to fill just one 5ml bottle, making it one of the most expensive essential oils on the market.
Rosewood
Rosewood oil is soothing, antiseptic, and perfect for sensitive skin. It promotes relaxation while helping to treat acne and dermatitis.
Sandalwood
Sandalwood has long been used for promoting mental clarity and emotional balance. Its astringent properties make it an excellent skin toner, reducing scars while acting as an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory agent.
Vetiver
Vetiver is a grass commonly found in the Indian subcontinent. Vetiver oil is cooling and calming, particularly for inflamed skin. It promotes the growth of new tissue and helps eliminate scars. Its soothing properties extend to muscular aches making it one of the key ingredients in our Jointment cream.
Using Essential Oils Safely
Due to their potency, essential oils should never be applied directly to the skin without proper dilution in a carrier oil. At CoSkin, we carefully blend our essential oils into safe, therapeutic formulations to ensure they are gentle on the skin while maximising their benefits.
If you want to experience the aroma of our essential oil blends, you can add a few drops to a mister or diffuser to freshen the air. Alternatively, placing a couple of drops on a tissue and inhaling can help calm the mind and lift your mood. You can also place a few drops of your favourite blend in the bath.
We sell two types of essential oil blends at CoSkin. Calm is perfect for easing the mind and de stressing at the end of a long day. Cov, Cold & Flu can help fight those symptoms that creep in when we are starting to catch a cold.
